How to hire an SEO: JobPage makes it on to SEOmoz homepage!

SEOmoz logoAfter several weeks of hard work, and intense grilling of some of the leading people in the SEO industry, our insightful and in-depth interview led guest post went live on SEOmoz – one of the world’s most read SEO blogs. How To Recruit An SEO – The SEO Industry Leaders Reveal Their Secrets” made it to the SEOmoz.org homepage last night, and in just a few hours it has already received over 700 page views! Not bad.

One of my favourite comments is from Ian Lurie. When asked “How do you test a candidate on their knowledge of SEO?“, Ian responed “If they claim to have experience, then yes, I test the heck out of them. I show them code and ask them if anything’s wrong with it; I ask them to optimize copy; I present scenarios where clients resist change and ask how they’d work to make their case; and I ask questions about current industry knowledge. I’ll also often ask questions about information retrieval, but that’s just mean :). If you go for a technical interview, why would you not expect to be tested to this level?

And what a lot of companies forgot is that, just like marketing, its much better to keep the employees that you have, rather spend even more time recruiting acquiring new ones. Staff retention not only saves costs, but it also helps build a better company. Rand Fishkin’s answer to “What do you do to retain talent in your business?” is something very close to my heart. Rand said “We work hard to make [SEO]Moz one of the city’s best places to work. I’m proud to say that we’ve got a very good retention rate with team members so far.“.

Big thanks to James for his awesome help on the article, and Patrick AltoftRichard BaxterWill CritchlowRand FishkinRuss JonesRob KerryIan LurieDave Naylor and Ben Norman to taking time out of their busy schedules to participate in the interviews.
